ABSTRACT  
The current era of accountability in education includes testing requirements 
from legislation such as No Child Left Behind requiring effective measurement 
and analysis of student achievement data. A second emphasis is the recommendation 
to have student-centered approaches to teaching and learning. This study reports 
how teachers have made the standards movement more compatible by coupling the 
How Students Learn (Donovan & Bransford, 2005) approach to science teaching and 
learning with an ethic of care, creating a Pedagogy of Promise (McCollough, 2005).
