Ivory Towers, Information Silos, and Extinction            Jason Stone, Oklahoma State University – Oklahoma City ABSTRACT Overpopulation, global warming and fossil fuel consumption threaten our species with extinction in the near future. Our institutions of higher learning are not producing adequate technological, scientific, or engineering based solutions to these problems. Two of the causes for this lack of progress are fragmentation and overspecialization of our institutions of higher learning. A new model for intra-institutional collaboration is called for. A few promising developments in the status quo are reviewed and critiqued. Academic Exchange Quarterly Winter 2009: Volume 13, Issue 4 FULL TEXT of this article is available by subscription.
