Analyzing Urban Space in Invisible Cities            Dean Swinford, Fayetteville State University ABSTRACT This essay describes an approach to teaching Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities that links study of the novel to current issues regarding urban development. The assignments featured help college students to understand and examine the characteristics of modernism and postmodernism. The essay links Calvino’s representation of the city to texts describing the design and social function of urban spaces.
