Developmental Principles of Self-Regulation
David J. Atencio, University of New Mexico
The concept of self-regulated learning, as built upon a capacity
for self-regulation, is examined in this paper. Self-regulatory
capacity is understood as a developmental outcome. Four
developmental principles that account for the development of
self-regulatory capacity are presented. Discussion is provided
on how each of these developmental principles structures the
emergence self-regulation in development and the nature of
self-regulated learning.
